Muia Consulting provides accounting and financial advisory services to a wide range of clients, and we aim to leverage artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) to enhance the accuracy, efficiency, and insight of our financial analysis and advisory processes. Potential applications include anomaly detection in transactions, predictive analytics for cash flow and tax forecasting, client segmentation, and automation of routine bookkeeping tasks.

We are seeking to collaborate with students to apply modern AI / ML techniques to our existing financial datasets. Students will be expected to design and build a model that supports one or more of the outlined applications.

This project will involve several steps, including:

  • Conducting background research on our current processes and datasets.
  • Analyzing financial and operational data to identify trends or irregularities.
  • Researching the latest AI / ML techniques applicable to financial services.
  • Developing an AI / ML model that delivers useful insights or automates decision-making.
  • Presenting alternative solutions to compare model performance and utility.
Livrables

By the end of the project, expected outcomes include:

  • A strong understanding of Canadian’s datasets and processes across GST/HST filings, CRA compliance, payroll processing, T1/T2 tax returns, and bookkeeping.
  • Familiarity with AI / ML techniques that can automate data entry, detect filing anomalies, flag payroll discrepancies, classify transactions, and optimize tax preparation.
  • Identification of specific, high-impact use cases where AI / ML can reduce manual work, increase accuracy, and improve regulatory compliance in the Canadian accounting context.

Final deliverables should include:

  • A comprehensive final report that details:
  • The dataset(s) reviewed
  • The chosen problem(s) addressed (e.g., automated GST reconciliation, T2 classification, CRA audit risk prediction)
  • The AI / ML models and methods used
  • Results and insights generated
  • Alignment with Canadian accounting and tax regulations
  • Clear recommendations for how Muia Consulting can implement or scale the proposed solutions across client services.
  • (Optional) A working prototype or demonstration of the model, where applicable.
Mentorat

Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:

  • Our current products and applications of AI / ML
  • The current data set and guidance in navigating it
  • Current industry standard approaches to AI / ML
  • Input on choices, problems or anything else the students might encounter.
