teaching lesson planningThe main objective of this project is to enhance student learning through a program called Sankofa Bridge Program at Downsview Secondary School. The project aims to address the needs of students by providing additional support and reinforcement of class materials, ultimately contributing to increased academic success. The students involved in this project are expected to achieve a deeper understanding of the class material and show improvement in their academic performance.
Requirements for Participants:
- Must be a Master’s or PhD student enrolled in a teaching school in Ontario.
- Must be able to commute to Downsview Secondary School.
- Must complete a vulnerable sector check to ensure the safety of the students involved.
- Aspiration to become a high school teacher or professor.
The project activities consists of:
- Prepare lesson plans using course materials learned from the class
- research the integration order non-traditional learning styles; kinetic and audio to support student learning
- Research individualized learning plans to support different types of learning styles
- Complete RSIH assessment forms and learning style forms for teaching interns.
- Design exercises that align with the curriculum to provide practical application of theoretical knowledge.
- Compile weekly reports summarizing the progress of the Sankofa program
- Schedule regular check-ins with the program coordinator to discuss the overall progress of the program.
Students will connect directly with us for mentorship throughout the project. We will be able to provide answers to questions such as:
- Access to academic performance data to track the impact of the Sankofa program on student learning
- Dedicated time with experienced teachers and program coordinators who can offer guidance, answer questions, and provide insights into effective teaching practices.
- Regular check-ins with the program coordinator to discuss progress, challenges, and receive feedback on teaching methods.
- Opportunities for professional development to stay updated on the latest educational research and best practices.
- Regular feedback on teaching methods and curriculum development to guide improvement.

The Racialized Students is a registered non-profit organization. We launched in 2020 during the onset of the pandemic. We were founded to be a resource for Black and racialized students to partake in meaningful research training and networking opportunities that help them advance throughout their academic journey and career journey.
We achieve this through the provision of mentorship, research, and employment training opportunities.
Our mission is to increase the representation of Black people across interdisciplinary Health sectors and increase the rate of employment among Black youth through career advancement training.
We envision a safer and inclusive Toronto where all Torontonians particularly Black and racialized communities can access services and employment free from racism and discrimination.
