Nicole McLaren is a multi-award-winning Metis entrepreneur from British Columbia and Saskatchewan. Her extensive knowledge of industry supply chains and economic development coupled with a passion for supporting fellow Indigenous entrepreneurs allowed her to transform a small book club into Raven Reads, the world’s first Indigenous subscription box.
Through her hard work and ambition, Raven Reads has grown exponentially, with thousands of subscribers across Canada, the US, and Europe. Once a sole proprietor, curating and packaging boxes in her garage, Nicole now manages an elite team and operations out of their Kamloops warehouse and distribution centre.

Raven Reads - Content Creation Project
PROJECT DESCRIPTION/DESCRIPTION DU PROJET: Raven Reads is an Indigenous subscription box that features books and giftware curated from Indigenous authors and entrepreneurs across North America. We are looking for a team of students to help with generate creative content that will help us improve our digital content library. A team of three students will conduct the following activities: Recording short videos for digital and social media channels for our accounts. Channels include but are not limited to TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, Twitter, Pinterest, and YouTube Help draft content such as blog posts and articles by researching existing content already available on the internet Sourcing user generated content online Plan and create engaging social and digital content to achieve client marketing goals KEY PROJECT ACTIVITIES/TÂCHES ASSOCIÉES AU PROJET: Create creative briefings to complement our annual marketing plan Conduct scheduled social media video interviews with employees, influencers, partners, authors, and suppliers. E-Commerce Data Management and IT Security Review
Raven Reads is a Canadian, social impact driven Indigenous subscription box that connects global subscribers with authentic Indigenous cultures and educational content. We curate books and giftware from Indigenous authors and entrepreneurs across North America and ship our boxes to subscribers around the world. We are global brand with a mission to raise awareness of contemporary Indigenous cultures, and to support Indigenous entrepreneurs and youth literacy in North America. Raven Reads is a rapidly growing e-commerce private company with thousands of customers around the world. We are seeking a team of information technology students specialising in security and data management to complete a review of our data security and protection systems, design a data security policy and recommendations for improved management procedures. Additional work would include a review of our overall IT security and data management system.
Consumer Product Market Research Project
PROJECT DESCRIPTION/DESCRIPTION DU PROJET: Raven Reads is an Indigenous subscription box that features books and giftware curated from Indigenous authors and entrepreneurs across North America. We are looking to conduct some market research activities to support our expansion activities. A team of three students will conduct the following activities: 1.) conduct desktop research to determine how many companies exist in Canada that manufacture personal care and hygiene products and are majority owned by Indigenous, BIPOC, women and youth; 2.) conduct research to determine the number of competitors in this market, and provide a brief competitor analysis of a selection of these competitors; 3.) conduct research to determine the number of competitors in third-party distribution and warehousing in British Columbia, and provide a brief competitor analysis of a selection of these competitors. Raven Reads is a social impact driven Indigenous subscription box that connects global subscribers with authentic Indigenous cultures and educational content. We curate books and giftware from Indigenous authors and entrepreneurs across North America and ship our boxes to subscribers around the world. We are global brand with a mission to raise awareness of contemporary Indigenous cultures, and to support Indigenous entrepreneurs and youth literacy in North America. Raven Reads is a rapidly growing organization and we are looking to enhance our senior management team. This project is to assist Raven Reads with development of a talent acquisition strategy for finding a new Director of Marketing. We are seeking an entrepreneurial, data-driven marketing leader who is passionate about all things e-commerce, social impact and BIPOC start-ups in Canada. For this project, students will work in a team to develop a recommended approach to recruiting the right candidate for this position and other future senior roles like this. Teams will co-develop suggested approach to recruiting, interviewing and on-boarding senior candidates to ensure Raven Reads is set up for success in the long run.
